Berlin is one of the last major European capitals where eating well does not require spending a lot of money. A genuinely excellent meal - the kind locals eat every day - can cost under €10. You just need to know where to go.
This guide is written by a Berlin local and food tour guide. These are real recommendations, not sponsored placements.
The tourist-facing restaurants near the main sights charge European capital prices. But one or two streets off the main drag, you are in a completely different economy. The Vietnamese spot where the kitchen staff eat after their shift. The Turkish bakery that has been feeding the neighborhood for thirty years. The ramen counter with six seats and no website.
Berlin rewards the curious. Here is where to start.
Mustafa's Gemuse Kebap - Berlin's most legendary chicken kebab. It costs around €5 and there will be a queue. Go on a weekday morning to beat the worst of it. The combination of roasted vegetables, yogurt sauce, and perfectly seasoned chicken is genuinely one of the best things you can eat in the city at any price.
Cobi's Chicken Doner - The Turkish take on chicken shawarma. Juicy, well-seasoned, and deeply satisfying. Less famous than Mustafa's, shorter queue, equally good.
Lee - Original Vietnamese Kitchen - Cheap Vietnamese done right. Generous portions and real flavors at budget prices. The pho is honest and filling. Cash only, no frills, excellent food.
Co Co banh mi deli - Fresh Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches at street food prices. The bread is crisp, the fillings are generous, and the whole thing costs less than a coffee at a tourist cafe.
Niko Niko Ramen - Street-style ramen. Quick, satisfying, and unpretentious. The broth is rich and the portions are generous. One of the better cheap lunch options in the city.
Hako Ramen Kreuzberg - Simple, honest ramen in Kreuzberg. Nothing fancy, just a really good bowl at a fair price.
Breggs - Build-your-own sandwiches with seriously good ingredients. Fast, fun, and satisfying. Under €7 for a full breakfast sandwich with coffee.
Zeit fur Brot - Berlin's famous cinnamon roll bakery. One cinnamon roll and a coffee is one of the best cheap breakfasts in the city.
Brammibal's Donuts - Berlin's most beloved vegan donuts. You will not notice they are vegan. Multiple locations across the city, around €3 per donut.
Curry 36 - Berlin's most famous currywurst stand. A city institution since 1981 and open late. The currywurst with fries is under €6 and fully acceptable as a meal.
The neighborhoods with the best cheap food are Kreuzberg, Neukolln, and Wedding. These are the areas with the highest concentration of immigrant-owned restaurants that have been cooking the same food for decades without needing to impress tourists.
The areas to avoid for budget eating are anywhere within walking distance of the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, or Alexanderplatz. Everything in those areas is priced for tourists.
